Hamilton Students and Staff Honor Mr. Hoppe Against Wayland Game

The Hamilton community was in full force on Friday as they filled Hamilton’s gym for the boy’s and girl’s games versus Wayland. The Hamilton student section and teachers took up one half of the gym and wore shirts saying HOPpE on the front and HTownStrong on the back.

The night started with the girls team taking on the undefeated Wayland girls basketball team, led by Central Michigan commit Presley Hudson. Hamilton struggled to get going early finding themselves in tough spots throughout the game. But, after being down by 35 points at halftime the girls fought their way back, but eventually fell 63-44. The Hawkeyes were led in scoring by senior Rachael Talsma who had 17 points.

When asked about the game, coach Dan VanHekken answered with, “Wayland played exceptionally well, and shot the ball well, the effort was good at the end, but obviously not enough for the whole game.”

In between games the Covering Hawkeye sports class did their first “Hawkeye Gameday” and made their picks for the boy’s game.

The boys found themselves down early, as Wayland led Hamilton 20-10 at the end of the first quarter and much like the girls game they fell victim to the fast pace offense of Wayland. The Hawkeyes fell 53-37, with Junior Grant Wolfram as Hamilton’s leading scorer with 14 points. The boys record is now 3-2 on the season.

Throughout both games the Hamilton student section supported their team, and started a new tradition with the “Happy Hoppe Dance“.

The boys and girls will play Catholic Central in their next games, the girls will be home and the boys are away.
