A Look Back at Five Seasons of Boys Swim and Dive by Sebastian Timm

In the short existence of the Division Three Boys Swimming & Dive team, Hamilton has won two state champions that were led by Coach Talsma. The Hamilton Hawkeyes have also had one runner up finish in 2010, edged out by East Grand Rapids, led by Coach Briggs. Also in this time frame of Division Three, the Hawks have never failed to finish outside of the top five in the state championship.

The 2008/2009 season was fueled by great individual and relay results; Hawkeyes were able to break Division Three record times for all three races. The 2008/2009 season was very successful; they reached and won the state championship, edging Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook- Kingswood with a score of 247-242. This meet was hosted at Oakland University (Rochester MI).

In the 2009/2010 season, the Hawkeyes once again reached the state championship. They went 7-2 with there two losses coming from Grandville and Zeeland West/Zeeland East. In the state championship meet the Hawkeyes ended up finishing second place, losing to East Grand Rapids 237-217. This meet was hosted at Eastern Michigan University (Ypsilanti MI).

During the 2010/2011 season the Hawkeyes were able to get back on top. They had a strong regular season where they finished 5-1 with the loss coming from Zeeland East/Zeeland West. The Hamilton Hawkeyes won the state championship for the second time in three years by winning 251.5-237.5 over our rival, Holland Christian. This meet was hosted at the Holland Aquatic Center (Holland MI).

The 2011/2012  season was a little bit of a slip for the Hamilton Hawkeyes though as they finished the season 4-4. The guys started the season off well with a 3-1 record, but there last four games resulted in a 1-3 record. The Hawkeyes did get into the Division Three State Finals though, finishing fourth overall trailing to eventual winners St. Joseph, Grand Rapids Christian (2nd), and East Grand Rapids (3rd).

The 2012/2013 season the Hawkeyes finished the season 4-3, once again after a strong start they slipped again towards the end of the season. The Hawkeyes made it into the state championship for the fifth straight season, also finishing in the top 5 for the fifth straight year as they finished fifth. The Hawkeyes (169 pts) had no chance of winning this year as it was a battle between East Grand Rapids (278 pts) and Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood (274 pts).

This season the Hamilton Hawkeyes are currently 3-2, once again losing to Zeeland East/Zeeland West for the sixth consecutive season. The Hawkeyes look to perform well in the upcoming OK Green Conference at the Holland Aquatic Center on 2/21 and 2/22. So let’s go and support the swimmers as they try to keep their top 5 streak alive in the state championship standings.
