Hamilton Girls Advance to District Finals

March Madness began early on Monday for girls basketball teams all across the state. The Hamilton Hawkeyes took on conference foe Zeeland West in their second round of District play this Wednesday after the Hawkeyes earned a bye in the first round. The two had already met twice this year with the Hawkeyes winning both games and favored to do the same this time around.

Hamilton lived up to expectations as they scored the first basket of the game and never gave their lead up in route to a 35-23 victory. The Hawks saw scoring from almost everyone with seniors Ashley Overbeek and Rachael Tolsma leading the team with ten points each. It was a very physical game with four different players getting four fouls, but the x-factor was Hamilton’s senior center, Brogan McMahon. McMahn had nine blocks and was a force in the paint for the Hawkeyes as her and Rachael Talsma held West’s leading scorer on the season, Kiri Tiemeyer to just two point making the physical center almost a non-factor throughout the game.

“Me and Rachael did a good job off boxing her out, cause she gets a lot of her points off of the offensive glass and she got a lot of fouls trying to rebound off of us,” Brogan said about shutting down Tiemeyer.

This is back-to-back appearances for Hamilton in the District championships as they won it last year, When I asked coach Dan VanHekken about how their experience will help the team, he said, “I think experience is huge, but at the same time we could have two freshman out there.” VanHekken is referring to Joslyn Bronkhurst and Brooklyn Groenheide, who have both played big roles for the Hawkeyes as freshman this year.

I asked Rachael Tolsma what it would mean to her team to repeat as a District Champ her senior year and she said, “We know how it feels to win from last year, so we really want to get that feeling again.”

The Hawkeyes will take on the winner of Holland Christian and Unity Christian in the finals on Friday. The game will start at 7:00 and will be played at Zeeland West high-school.
