The girls varsity soccer team looks to start off the season strong after hiring a new coach in Lauren Steiper. Mrs. Steiper is coming over from the head coaching position at Zeeland East. She coached the Chix to an 8-8-2 record last year and 5-5 in the conference.

Key players that are returning for the Hawkeyes are Senior forward Ashley Overbeek and Senior defender Alyssa Harbottle. Ashley Overbeek led the team last year in goals scored with eighteen. Even though the team will be counting on those two key players, Coach Stieper said, “We will be counting on all of our players equally this year, even though some might make more game-changing plays than others.  More than anything we will need to be sure that everyone on the team has bought into our ideals and is excited just to be a part of this team and a part of the hard work that we are going to do.  If we can accomplish that, all the other pieces will fall into place and I think all players will be counted on to play their role to the best of their ability.”

Last season, the team finished under .500. Coach Stieper said, “I plan for our team to go as far as we possibly can. I have high hopes for where that could be, but ultimately that is a team goal that we need to set.  Personally, I think district champs should be an initial goal at this point.”
