The team won their first invitational ever, and followed it up with another. The team was aided with the acquisition of 4 runners from other sports or from previously not playing a fall sport. Matt Field, Charlie Doeden, Gerald DeFouw, and Elliot Klingenberg all ran varsity in their first season of Cross Country. The team Exceeded expectations according to Coach Spotts.

The Hawkeye’s best win was early in the season at the Wayland Invite. The victory set the tone for the season and let the team see just how good they were going to be. The win was also significant because it was the first Invitational win ever for the team.

The MVP for the boys was Mark Freyhof. Freyhof lead the team in every meet, and was the only boy to qualify for state. Mark also moved to 2nd fastest all time with his mark of 16:10 for a 5K. Coach Kevin Spotts says “[Mark] works hard and is a committed runner,” and also added that for Mark improvement is always a goal.

Gerald DeFouw ran his first season of Cross Country and started the season as the 6th runner on the team. As the season progressed, Gerald cut almost two minutes of his time and became the team’s 3rd fastest runner. DeFouw earns most improved in our eyes because his improvements significantly helped the team.

Hamilton graduates Gerald DeFouw and Andrew Fathman on the boys side. This is a huge loss for the team, losing two of their best runners. With the loss of Andrew Fathman they also loss leadership, as Andrew was a two year captain. However the team is still looking good going into the 2015 season. There is no significant new talent coming up from the middle school, but Matt Field and Charlie Doeden will finally be healthy and bothhave great potential. They also return Mark Freyhof, Caleb Topp and Elliot Klingenberg who all ran great this past year. Mr. Spotts also added that the Cross Country Family would “always welcome athletes who would like to be part of a competitive team.”
