OTSEGO, Mich. – Last Saturday, the competitive cheer team had their first invitational. Their team went to Otsego to start off the season, and competed against 8 other teams. The Hawkeyes ended up getting 4th to Plainwell (1st), Gull Lake (2nd), and St. Joseph (3rd), but they beat the other four teams there which consisted of Vicksburg, Stevensville-Lakeshore, Zeeland West and Wayland Union, in that order.

Hamilton got a total of 656.32 points which was only 30.92 points behind the 1st place team. When Coach Emillie Gort was asked how she thought that the invitational went she said, “With it being the first competition I had nothing I was displeased with. The team did well for their first tournament and, the girls handled themselves very well.” The girls got their fourth place finish, but they finished fairly close to the leader because they worked hard. Coach Gort also noted that, “I think it’s a nice boost of confidence for the girls to know that hard work does pay off.  The girls worked very hard to get to this point.”

Sophomore KT Manifold said, “We did really good. We beat teams that have beaten us in previous years.” She said that they did very well for their first invitational and for the rest of the season she feels that they will do very well compared to other seasons. The team placed very well and they feel that they will continue to do good for the rest of the season.

The competitive cheer team is next in action tonight at the Mona Shores Invite.  Start time is 5:30.
