Hamilton Girls Basketball drops rivalry game vs HC

By: Ben Koopman

HAMILTON, Mich. – On Saturday Hamilton faced off against Holland Christian for a Saturday night double header thanks to the friday cancellation. It was also the third annual Two Hearts for One Cause game. Both teams started well with Hamilton trailing 12 to 14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Second quarter was a different story. Holland Christian’s defense came out strong and forced numerous turnovers and held the Hawkeyes to 1 point the entire quarter while scoring 10. “The second quarter issue simply was the inability to make baskets,” VanHekken said. “I am OK with holding a team to 10 or less points per quarter, but we have to be able to score and make plays.”

In the second half Hamilton couldn’t keep up, with the Maroons out scoring the Hawkeyes 26-17 in the second half. One of the most unsettling stats from the game was that the Maroons outrebounded the Hawkeyes 42-28. “We got out worked on the boards and up & down the court,”Coach VanHekken commented.

Kendra Bott lead the way for the Hawkeyes with 9 with VandeVoorde and Edigar adding 6. Holland Christian had three players in double figures, with Allison Buikema.

Captain Courtney VandeVoorde said, “they learned a lot from the game, and will look to use the loss as motivation in the coming weeks.”

The Hawkeyes are back in action on Friday against the Dux of Zeeland West.
