Hamilton scraps for win over Allendale

HAMILTON, Mich. – It has been a great year for Hamilton basketball, but it hasn’t been an easy road. The Hawkeyes were coming off of one of their easiest wins this year, after beating conference opponent Zeeland West 54-43. Heading into this Friday with a 5-2 record, they would face another 5-2 team in Allendale. The Falcons were having a great season themselves, coming off of a big upset win over a 7-1 Coopersville team.

The game was shaping up to be another thriller for Hamilton  as regulation would expire with the score tied at 47. Games like this were all too familiar for Hamilton and history was not in their favor after dropping close games to both Holland Christian and Middleville just a week ago. But this time around Hamilton would be the one on the winning end. A big overtime performance from Senior Colton Becksvoort, who had six of Hamilton’s eight overtime points, allowed the Hawkeyes to pull out the 55-53 win.

“I don’t think anyone doubted that we could win that game and we played hard enough to get it.” Senior guard, Evan Woodke said about his team’s ability to fight back from an eight point deficit with under five minutes left.

Hamilton has had a knack for late game comebacks, fighting back to a two point game vs TK last week, after being down 13 with under three minutes left, and scraping back into a Holland Christian game that also seemed well out of reach with just five minutes left. The Hawkeyes just couldn’t break through the wall though and come away with the wins, coming up short in both of them.

But it was a different outcome for Hamilton this time around. “I looked in their eyes between the third and fourth quarter and they still believed, we said we’re in a hole and we’re going to have to fight out of it.” Coach Haverdink said, “Our kids battled and they never gave up on it.”

No doubt a big win for a Hamilton team that was predicted to finish last in the confrence by mlive.com when the season started. The Hawkeyes are now 6-2 and 1-1 in the OK Green. Their next game will be this Friday in a boys and girls double header vs Unity Christian.
