HAMILTON, Mich. – On Tuesday, January 6 the Hamilton boys swim team took on East Grand Rapids. The Hawkeyes fell behind with a score of 107 to 76. Alec Nyboer set a new record in the 100 yard fly with a time of 52.14 and won the event against the Pioneers. Austin Fogerty also led the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.87. The Hawkeyes were also victorious in the 400 yard relay finishing at 3:29.73, including Ryan Underwood, Ryan Van Oss, Matt Oonk, and Austin Fogerty. In the one meter dive, Andrew Fathman took first with Nolan DeJonge in second, and Kohl Baumann taking third. Unfortunately, the boys still couldn’t pull through. “We swam fairly flat and without a whole lot of life. If we swam where we’re capable, we still would have lost but we could have made it much closer,” says Coach Talsma.

Although the Hawkeyes could have swam better, East Grand Rapids is known for having very dedicated team in which most of their athletes are swimmers all year round. The Pioneers are also about twice as big as Hamilton. “They have a great developmental program and a culture that promotes working hard.” a quote from Coach Talsma about the opposing team. Andy MacGregor led the team with a first place in the 200 yard free and the 100 yard free as well as Christian Bart taking the 100 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard IM. The Hawkeyes fought back but couldn’t come out on top. They are working hard to hopefully be victorious in their next meet. “As far as improvement goes we are seeing much improvement in practice and are all looking forward to our meet coming up against Byron Center,” Alec Nyboer. The Hawkeyes are in action again on Tuesday, January 20 at Byron Center.
