Girls Basketball District Preview

by: Ben Koopman

District 50 is basically the OK-Green Conference, with the exception of Allendale, so most teams have already played. Holland Christian will be hosting this years tournament at their high school.

On the top side of the bracket, Allendale and Unity Christian have byes and will meet in the second round on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00pm. On the bottom half, Hamilton faces off against rival Holland Christian on Monday, March 2 at 7:00pm. The winner will face Zeeland West on Wednesday.

Unity Christian and Holland Christian are two teams that will garner most of the attention. Both teams have proven they can beat all the other teams in District 50. Hamilton and Zeeland West also have good chances to make it to the finals, both having average seasons, while showing sparks of greatness.

In the first two meetings between the Maroons and the Hawkeyes, Holland Christian won both games, winning 50-30 and sneaking out a narrow 54-49 win most recently. In years past, we have seen either school win in districts despite losing both regular season games, so it should be a pretty fair fight. Senior captain Courtney VandeVorde is optimistic about their chances: “Last game against Holland Christian, we hung around until late and lost in a close battle.” She also said if their team plays well, they have a good shot at making it to the district finals.

Hamilton also brings in Sarah Buresh after moving her up from Junior Varsity last week. Buresh, a 5’8” Freshman, plays defense very effectively and also provides some offensive threat and will be key playing the Forward position.
