HAMILTON, Mich- The Varsity swim and dive team lost to Zeeland in the previous competition on February 3 with a score of 111-74. Alec Nyboer broke the pool record in the 50 fly with a time of 23.88 and Matt Oonk made the state cut for the 100 yard breast stoke. Oonk was also victorious in the 50 yard free, and Nyboer in the 100 yard back stroke. Other strong performances were made by Nolan Dejonge taking third in the 1 meter dive. Also the relay team of Austin Fogerty, Ryan Underwood, Matt Oonk, and Alec Nyboer finishing first in the 200 yard medley relay. Unfortunately Zeeland fought back hard with Gabe Trevino  and Micah DeJonge outshining the Hawkeyes in many of the races. Trevino was victorious in 100 yard breast stroke (making the state cut along with Oonk) and DeJonge winning the 100 yard free and the 200 yard IM. Other performances made by Max Stears winning the 500 yard free. “We usually have a tough time beating Zeeland but the team gave it a 100% effort,” says Ryan Underwood.

Coach Talsma also commented on the effort from the team and the difficulty of beating Zeeland. “As a whole we swam very well against a potential top 5 team in Division 1.”

As the season progresses the Hawkeyes are working on putting full races together and having faster turns on the walls. Holland is the next rival for Hamilton and will be competing on February 12 at 6:30.
