HAMILTON, Mich.- This weekend, the Hamilton boys swim team competed in the conference meet and took third place with Zeeland High taking first and Byron Center taking second. The boys fought hard with a few new state cuts for John Smallegan in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.57 and a 56.72 in the 100 fly. Ryan Vanoss also making the cut in the 200 free with the time of 1:53.80. “The meet was primarily filled with highs and our guys that were tapered for the meet did about as well as we expected,” says a proud Coach Talsma.

The Hawkeyes were victorious in the 200 medley relay, as expected, with Alec Nyboer, Adam Everse, Austin Fogerty, and Matt Oonk. We also took home the win with Matt Oonk in the 50 yard free, Nyboer in the 100 yard fly as well as the 100 yard backstroke. Although we swam well, both Zeeland and Byron Center put up a fight with 608 points and 438.5 respectively. Top competitors being Gabe Trevino and Micah DeJonge for Zeeland taking the 200 yard free, 200 IM, 100 yard free and the 500 yard free. Zeeland’s relay also finished strong in the 40 yard free relay and the 200 free relay including Trevino, DeJonge, Mac Robertson, and Judd Vander Plaats. Byron Center also competed strongly just shortly behind Zeeland in many races. “We would have had to have everything go perfectly and Byron Center to slip up a bit in order for us to have beaten them,” Coach Talsma comments on the loss.

Ryan Underwood, senior on the team feels that “as a team we did fantastic, we were expected to be where we were, but everyone dropped time and it was an overall great meet.

The guys that made state cuts will be swimming the state meet on March 13 and 14 at the Aquatic Center.
