Spring Preview: Boys Varsity Golf

Written by: Trenton Kronemeyer

Hamilton golf had its most successful season ever just a year ago; winning both the OK Green and the District Championship. They fell just short of making it to team state at regionals, and look to repeat last year’s performance or even surpass those accomplishments. The team has high goals for themselves as they return seven people from last year’s team. They did lose Anthony Guillozet, last season’s team captain, but with six seniors on this year’s team including Nick Carlson, they shouldn’t have a problem filling that position.

You can look for Nick to carry this team pretty far in his final season of high school play. The University of Michigan commit won State three years ago as a Freshman and has tied for second place the past two seasons. He is determined and motivated to repeat his winning performance and take home a another State title before he heads off to Ann Arbor. Expect him to lead the team pretty far into the season this Spring.

But, the rest of the team can carry its own weight as well. With seniors Nick Grifhorst and Justin Folkert coming back for this season, they will have plenty of experience and talent to make a good run at state. Grifhorst, who recently committed to golf at Rochester College, is excited for the season to start. “I think this team can go very far if we believe in ourselves and have confidence in our game. Last year we had issues with that and it cost us.”

“This may be the strongest team Hamilton it has had in some time. The team has lofty goals, if we can relax and play our game, we could go far” said Coach Kevin Arnold about this year’s team.

He had his best season ever last year as head coach; sweeping all jamborees en route to winning conference. They also got their first banner for winning districts. With returners Zach Carlson, Justin Folkert, Nick Grifhorst, John Mitchell, Eric Peterson and Eric Selle, along with newcomers Austin Haverdink and Jacob Arnold, this team has the ability to repeat last year’s success.
