Boys CC Wins Wayland Invitational, Girls Finish Second

WAYLAND, Mich- On Friday, the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams ran their first race of the season at the Wayland Invitational. They ran well despite a very hilly course.

The boys’ team won the meet finishing 20 points ahead of the second place Wayland Wildcats. Mark Freyhof led the Hawkeyes taking 2nd (17:47) despite a bruised heel. He was followed by teammates: Matt Field in 4th (18:32), Luke Koopman in 5th (18:40), Caleb Topp taking 6th (18:41) and Elliot Klingenberg finishing 10th (19:12).

On the Girls’ side, the Hawkeyes took 2nd in a close race, finishing 5 points behind Wayland. Erika Freyhof won the race with a time of 19:37, followed by Audrey Freyhof in 2nd (20:52). Also scoring for the Hawkeyes was Jennica Schaffer finishing 11th (23:53), Melinda Overbeek taking 12th (23:57) and Sheryl-lyn Zahl in 18th (25:08).

The Cross Country team now has three weeks to prepare for their next meet on Monday, September 14 at the TK Invitational.
