BROOKLYN, Mich. – The Hamilton Cross Country teams ran at the MHSAA state finals on Saturday, November 7 at the Michigan International Speedway.

Erika Freyhof ran away with the state title with a time of 18:00.7 becoming Hamilton’s first ever state champion in cross country history. She led nearly the entire race finishing 22 seconds ahead of Holland Christian’s Kayla Windemuller in 2nd. This is the third time that she has earned all-state in her cross country career.

Erika’s finish led the Hawkeyes to a 19th place finish out of 27 teams with a score of 457. Her younger sister Audrey Freyhof fell just short of earning all-state finishing 33rd with a time of 19:14. Also scoring for the Hawkeyes were Melinda Overbeek in 166th (20:49), Sheryl-lyn Zahl in 170th (20:54) and Kim Sikkema in 230th (22:48).
The team was very satisfied with their performance as they were not expected to even qualify for state. Saturday’s race marked the end of a very successful season for the Hawkeyes. They are a young team and will lose just one senior next year.
