State Meet Preview: Cross Country

By: Ben Koopman

Making to the state finals as a team is difficult in every sport, but the Hamilton Cross Country program was able to do that, and not just with one team, but both boys and girls.

It has been a memorable season for both teams so far, but now it’s time to prove just how good they are this Saturday at Michigan International Speedway for the state meet.

The boys’ team comes in ranked 16th in the state, after finishing second in region 12.

Mark Freyhof is the top individual runner for the Hawkeyes, and he comes in ranked 13th, hoping to earn all-state (Top 30).

On the girls side of things, the team is just excited to have made it. They only had an outside chance of making it, but that was before losing Jennica Schaffer to an injury. Collectively the Hawkeyes ran their hearts out, giving them the edge over Zeeland West for third place. Look for the team to do the same this weekend.

Individually for the girls, Erika Freyhof is ranked 1st, after finishing 7th last year. Her main competition comes from Kayla Windemuller of Holland Christian. Audrey Freyhof also hopes to earn all-state, as she is ranked 29th.

Other area teams include Holland Christian girls and the Unity Christian boys.
