Competitive Cheer Squad Doesn’t Back Down

BYRON CENTER, Mich. – The Hamilton Hawkeye competitive cheer team competed at Byron Center on Wednesday, January 13. They were up against Thornapple-Kellogg, Hastings, Grand Rapids Catholic Central, Wayland, Byron Center, Zeeland West, and Ottawa Hills. Hamilton placed 6th overall out of the 8 schools with a score of 602.8 – just 1 point behind Byron Center.

In the first round, which included the cheers. Involved in this round were seniors: Marissa Dowker, Megan Hellenthal, Jadin Kalmbaugh, Kirsten Harper; juniors: Madison Copeland, Emily Timmer; and sophomores: Frida Chico, Jennifer Eastman. At the end of the round, their round score was 193.5.

In the second round, which included tumbling. Involved in this round were seniors: Marissa Dowker, Megan Hellenthal, Jadin Kalmbaugh; juniors: Emily Timmer, Angelica Rynsburger, Madison Copeland; sophomores: Frida Chico, Jennifer Eastman, Alexandria Edsall; and freshman: Hannah Wettlaufer. At the end of the round, their round score was 164.58.

In the third round, which included stunting. Involved in this round were seniors: Marissa Dowker, Megan Hellenthal, Jadin Kalmbaugh; junior: Angelica Rynsburger; sophomores: Jennifer Eastman, Frida Chico; and freshmen: Hannah Wettlaufer, Natalia Monarrez. At the end of the round, their round score was 244.6.

Junior Madison Copeland said, “The third round was our weakest round. We were switching people around and changing things often. We all felt really confident during the first and second rounds though.”
