HAMILTON, Mich. – On Tuesday, the Hawkeye softball team was swept by the Zeeland West Dux in an away double-header.
In game one the Dux came away with a 11-4 victory, thanks in part to a huge eight run fourth inning. The Hawkeyes were able to keep the game close going into the fourth, down only 3-2, but after the Dux’s outburst the damage was done. Hamilton did not give up another run and added two themselves, but were unable to make a serious comeback.
Haley VanHuis went 2-3 with an RBI, while Meri Klenk and Liza Lohman both went 2-5 to lead the Hawks. Klenk also pitched a complete game giving up 11 earned runs in six innings, while striking out four.
The Hawkeyes got mercied 18-7 after six innings in game two. The Dux jumped out to 11-0 lead after three innings and never looked back. Zeeland West scored in every inning, putting up four runs in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th innings.
Allyssa VandenBerg went 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI for Hamilton. Chloe DeJonge pitched the full five innings while adding a hit and two RBI on offense.
The Hawkeyes next game is home April 21st against Zeeland West.
