MIDDLEVILLE, Mich. – The Hamilton varsity football team opened up the 2016 season with a 41-27 road victory over the Middleville Trojans on Thursday, Aug. 25.

Trenton Lane carried the load on the ground for the Hawkeyes, running for 239 yards and two touchdowns. His first score was a 46-yard run, and he followed that with a 73-yard score. Big plays were common, as Senior quarterback Keaton Mudd also had a 62-yard touchdown scamper.

“We did some things well but we lost our composure down the stretch,” Hamilton Coach Chris Myers said. “We made a lot of mistakes.”

Hamilton took advantage of a pair of Middleville fumbles, opening the night’s scoring by punching the ball into the endzone twice in 19 seconds.

“I was happy that we took advantage of (the two Middleville fumbles),” Myers said.

Kaleb Moore added a 28-yard scoring rush, and Mudd connected with Sawyer McMahon for Hamilton’s only touchdown of the game through the air.

Mudd credited the big plays to the play of his offensive line.

“The O-line was big and they really helped jump start us,” Mudd said. “They are big and they know how to use their size.”

Myers, who coached his first game for Hamilton in more than three years, and the Hamilton players arrived at the stadium to a near capacity crowd.

“Our community matters,” Myers said.

Hamilton open its home schedule next Thursday, Sept. 1, against Coopersville at 7 pm. The game will also serve as the 2016 Hamilton Football Alumni Reunion. Former Hawkeye football players are encourage to meeting by the rock near the track at 6:40 pm to be recognized by the crowd. The group will then form the tunnel for the 2016 team to run through.
